CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA. Waves breaking against sharp cliffs. A beach of pearly white sand. A backdrop of tree-topped rolling hills. Sound too good to be true? It's not ­ it's Carmel-by-the-Sea. This picturesque community delivers both dynamic atmosphere and a place to get away and recharge. Its relaxed pace mingles with European ambience, and its many annual arts festivals draw visitors from near and far. You can also browse unique shops, enjoy one-of-a-kind dining, and capitalize on the flexibility that such a village can provide. NAPA. Nestled in the historic wine country among natural wildlife preserves, this championship course features a links-style design. Precise club selection for approach shots is a must, since these elevated greens are also well mounded, and long putts can be extremely difficult. A number of unique challenges come into play, including working vineyards, water hazards, and natural stone walls.

PEBBLE BEACH. Located about two hours south of San Francisco, this course is a must-see. With ever-changing weather conditions, it can play differently from hour to hour. Bordered by deep rough and numerous bunkers, fairways are in excellent condition. Both sand dunes and bunkers surround the tiny greens. With the ocean coming into play on seven different occasions, breathtaking views are common on this world-class course.

HALF MOON BAY. This Arthur Hills course is a true Scottish links-style course with wide, rolling fairways that often serve up uneven lies. Trouble comes in the form of well-placed fairway and greenside bunkers and tall, wispy grasses that make shots out of the rough very challenging. These greens are average in size but very demanding. With most holes running along the coast and very few trees to provide protection, the wind can wreak havoc on even the smallest mistake. Of course, the scenery is something to brag about, even if your score is not.

MONTEREY. Whether you're in the mood for coastal nostalgia or hope to catch a glimpse of migrating grey whales, Monterey is not to be missed. Walk down historic Canary Row and investigate the lively district's many converted warehouses, which now house a variety of shops. Or, grab a bite to eat, breathe in the sea air, and imagine what the bustling spot used to be like. The town is also home to the world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium, located in a former cannery, and to Old Fisherman's Wharf, where working fishermen unload their catches.
